The Government of Colombia “has decided, with its vote, to support the majority of United Nations against occupation of the Palestinian territory”, stated Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, in a message on his X account, on Monday evening.

“Only dialogue is the rational path to overcome a 75-year conflict where Palestinian people have far been the victim”, added, recalling his proposal before the U.N. General Assembly, to call up two peace conferences to end the conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine.

“We stand for peace, peaceful negotiation, and freedom of Palestine people from all oppression”, emphasized President Petro.

The statement

The following is the message published by President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, in response to the statement by Senator Jonathan Ferney Pulido Hernandez:

“Senator (Pulido Hernandez) evidences a lack of knowledge by making a statement as false as the one expressed here, which coincides with the one from the Colombian extreme right.

First, the Islamic fundamentalist groups generally represent the right-wing (political position) in their societies, fundamentalisms that confuses State with religion, seen not only in Islamic societies, but the Israeli, the North American fundamentalism, and in other societies.

If he wants to know who the Latin American left-wing has supported to in the Middle East, he can find those supports in secular political organizations, which in the Arab case, it has to do with the Pan-Arabism, the Ba’ath Political Party, and Arab Socialism. In the specific Palestine case, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), today being the majority in the Palestinian National Authority, against which Hamas fights.

The Palestinian Embassy in Colombia responds to the Palestinian National Authority.

He will also find support from the Latin American left-wing to the Israeli citizenship progressive movements, which has always supported a negotiated and peaceful solution to the conflict in Palestine.

Islamic fundamentalism was strongly supported by the U.S. because they considered it was the way to stop Arab socialism and the USSR. That was why the CIA financed the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Bin Laden was trained by the U.S. Hamas was created by Mossad officials, among others, to weaken Al Fatah and their leftist project for Palestine.

As it usually happens, this fundamentalism has caused the division of the Arab world and the interests of world powers.

That is why I publicly opposed the invasion to Iraq, and all invasions for oil in the world. I supported the Kurdish cause against ISIS, another fundamentalist group derived from the U.S. invasion to Iraq. I publicly supported the struggle of the PKK fighters in Northern Syria against ISIS, that is one of the great feats of the progressive forces today. And I have supported every democratic faction that emerges in the Middle East.

My government, contrary to previous ones that always voted with the U.S. and four more countries against the U.N. resolutions, widely supported, calling for an end to the apartheid and the occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel, have decided with its vote support the majority of the United Nations against the occupation of Palestinian territory.

In my speech at the U.N., I proposed two peace conferences for Ukraine and Palestine. Only dialogue is the rational path to overcome a 75-year conflict where Palestinian people have far been the victim.

The extreme right positions always lead to confuse the fight against Zionism, the Israeli colonial intention to subjugate the Palestinian people and territory, with anti-Semitism. A great part of Israeli people wants peace, negotiation, and the recognition of Palestine. Today, the extreme right governs Israel and also Gaza. In their fight, both sides strengthen. We stand for peace, peaceful negotiation, and freedom of Palestine people from all oppression”.
